The Planning Commission, under G.O. Ms. No.1597, education, dated 9th June 1962, approved the establishment of three Technical Institutions for Women in the state of Chennai during the Third Five Year Plan period. As a result, the government decided to initiate a Women's Polytechnic in Madras City in the public sector during 1962-63. This marked a significant milestone in technical education, creating new opportunities for women in fields previously dominated by men.

The inaugural Women's Polytechnic in Chennai commenced on 6th September 1962, admitting 100 students annually, with the current intake standing at 210. Initially housed in the Old Civil Jail Buildings at Broadway due to accommodation challenges, the institute temporarily shifted to the 'Bridge House' at Adyar in July 1963 to accommodate the growing student body in its second academic year. Recognizing the need for a hostel, one was established for 35 students in a private building at Kasturibai Nagar in June 1963.

In July 1964, the polytechnic underwent another relocation, this time to the campus of the Central Institutes of Technology, while the hostel was situated at 'Bridge House' to accommodate more students. Since June 1966, the Women's Polytechnic has been operating in its dedicated buildings within the Central Institutes of Technology Campus at Adyar.
