While situated in the heart of Cherthala town, adjacent to the national highway, the college serves as a key educational hub for the surrounding villages, many of which are economically underprivileged. Moreover, Government Polytechnic College, Cherthala, acts as a Nodal Polytechnic, playing a pivotal role in coordinating with other polytechnic colleges in the Alappuzha District.
The institution has a rich history, starting its journey as a Junior Technical School in 1959. Over time, it evolved and was subsequently upgraded to a Technical High School. In 1994, it achieved the status of a Polytechnic College, offering three-year diploma courses in Engineering/Technology under the Department of Technical Education, Government of Kerala. Subsequently, the government sanctioned two additional diploma courses in Engineering Technology, further expanding the educational offerings at the institution.
