The establishment and growth of Chemical Industries on a large scale were initiated as a follow-up to this development. Recognizing the increasing spectrum of Chemical Industries and the imminent need for a skilled workforce to operate and maintain them, the Government of Tamil Nadu inaugurated The Institute of Chemical Technology in 1963, marking it as the first of its kind in the state (refer to G.O. No. 3044 Education dated 20-12-62). Initially housed at the Central Polytechnic Building, the Institute later relocated to its current site in the C.I.T. Campus on 12-6-1964.
Considering the burgeoning demand for skilled professionals in the Sugar Industry within the state, the Government of Tamil Nadu introduced a 3-year Sandwich Course in Sugar Technology at the Institute of Chemical Technology starting from the academic year 1970-71 (see G.O. Ms. No. 843 Education Department dated 28-5-1970). However, it's worth noting that this Diploma Programme was eventually discontinued, as indicated in G.O. Ms. No. 1160 Education (TES-2) Department dated 13-8-1990.
