Thiagarajar Polytechnic College is a historically significant institution as it holds the distinction of being the first aided polytechnic in India. It was established in 1956 by Late Dr. Alagappa Chettiar, an eminent educationalist and philanthropist. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, specially sanctioned its creation. The college began with 30 students in the Civil Engineering branch and later expanded to include Mechanical and Electrical branches.

Thiagarajar Polytechnic College is a historically significant institution as it holds the distinction of being the first aided polytechnic in India. It was established in 1956 by Late Dr. Alagappa Chettiar, an eminent educationalist and philanthropist. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, specially sanctioned its creation. The college began with 30 students in the Civil Engineering branch and later expanded to include Mechanical and Electrical branches.

After the demise of Dr. Alagappa Chettiar in 1957, the institution came under the management of K. Thiagarajan Chettiar from Madurai in 1961. Mr. E.K. Menon served as the Principal during this period. In 1980-81, the management was transferred to the Trichur Diocesan Community Development Society, Thrissur, under the patronage of the Archbishop of Thrissur. Rev. Fr. Joseph Kakkassery became the Chairman of the Governing Council, and Shri. Francis C. Joseph assumed the role of Principal.

The institution operates with the approval of the State Board of Technical Education, Kerala, and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Delhi. The current intake of students in the Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical branches is 60 each, with a total staff strength of 82. The college hosts various extracurricular activities such as N.C.C., N.S.S., and a Continuing Education Cell. The Parent-Teacher Association (P.T.A.) and Alumni Association actively contribute to student development activities.

Thiagarajar Polytechnic College has maintained a good track record of results in the state, and its alumni have gone on to serve as engineering professionals in internationally acclaimed institutions worldwide. They are recognized for their dedication, individual thinking, honesty, and a kind attitude toward others.
