Established in 1955 in Karaikudi, the Alagappa Government Polytechnic College was founded by the eminent industrialist and philanthropist, Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar, with the aim of delivering high-quality education to the student community. In 1966, the Government of Tamil Nadu took over the administration of the college.

The Tamil Nadu Government Polytechnic College stands as a distinguished technical institution in the Southern Region of India. Its origins trace back to 1890 when the District Board of Madurai initiated a Technical Institute, later merging with the Municipal Industrial School. On April 1, 1910, the administration transitioned to the Presidency of Madras.

In response to the burgeoning industrial development in and around Trichy, the Government of Tamil Nadu approved the establishment of this Government Polytechnic College during the third Five Year Plan. Commencing its operations in June 1963 at the Seshasyee Institute of Technology in Trichy, the college swiftly transitioned to its current campus in June 1966 due to its growth.

Established in 1981 in Aranthangi, this polytechnic college aimed to uplift education in the region. Initially, it operated from temporary sheds in Azhianilai on the outskirts of Aranthangi before relocating to its current location on the Aranthangi - Avudaiyarkoil Highway in 1983. Spanning 20 hectares, the campus boasts a striking main building and supplementary structures for laboratories and workshops.

The government polytechnic commenced its operations in 1982, admitting an initial cohort of 120 students. During the construction phase of its dedicated building, the institution found temporary accommodation in an expansive European bungalow near Hill Bunk. In 1988, the polytechnic transitioned to its current location on the outskirts of Ooty, featuring a newly constructed building in a serene environment.
